Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold the '2023 Overseas Blue Chip Artists Special Exhibition' at the Nowon Art Gallery in the Nowon Cultural and Arts Center.

The term blue chip refers to large, high-quality stocks with high profitability, growth potential, and stability in the stock market. Borrowed into the art market, blue chip artists are those recognized for their price, reputation, and art historical value.

Last year, the district successfully held the 'Overseas Blue Chip Artists Exhibition' for the first time, featuring works by seven renowned overseas artists.

This year, in addition to the artists who were well-loved last year, five more internationally acclaimed artists have been added, selecting a total of 12 artists. The exhibition features 22 original works, including 13 pieces by 12 'Overseas Blue Chip Artists' such as ▲Andy Warhol, the pioneer of pop art ▲Keith Haring, who broke down the barriers between high art and popular art with vibrant primary colors and humorous graffiti ▲Damien Hirst, one of the most influential artists in the global art market.

The exhibition includes not only familiar oil paintings by artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring but also works by contemporary artists less known to the public despite their reputation, such as ▲Edgar Plans and ▲Tomogatsu Matsuyama, as well as some print works, adding diversity to the media of expression.

The district provides an audio guide service to make it easy for visitors without background knowledge to enjoy the exhibition. Visitors who bring personal earphones can scan the QR codes on each artwork’s caption to listen to about 30 minutes of detailed commentary, enabling a richer appreciation experience.

The 'Overseas Blue Chip Artists Exhibition' is being held on the 4th floor of the Nowon Cultural and Arts Center at the Nowon Art Gallery from the 18th of last month until the 10th of next month. The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. without any closing days during the period, and admission is free without prior reservation.

Inside the exhibition hall’s atelier, related programs such as ▲Warhol’s Factory and ▲Pop Art Keyring Making are also offered. Participants can challenge themselves with pop art projects using Warhol’s iconic soup can or create keyrings using their own pop art creations. However, each program is limited to participants aged 8 and above, with a maximum of 10 people per session, so prior reservation is required. Detailed schedules can be found on the Nowon Cultural Foundation website.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Following last year, we have prepared so that residents can vividly experience works by world-renowned artists close to their living areas this year as well,” adding, “We will continue to strive to expand cultural and artistic enjoyment opportunities for residents through high-quality exhibitions and performances and to realize universal welfare through culture.”
