India has entered the 'Top 5' markets where Apple sells the most iPhones for the first time.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 18th (local time), India ranked 5th in iPhone sales in the second quarter of this year, surpassing Germany and France. This is the first time India has ranked 5th in quarterly iPhone sales.
The United States was the market with the highest iPhone sales, followed by China, Japan, and the United Kingdom in 2nd to 4th place.
Counterpoint Research explained, "The Indian market grew by 50% compared to last year," adding that it accounted for about 4% of total iPhone sales in the second quarter. However, the exact number of iPhone sales was not disclosed.
The share of iPhones in the Indian smartphone market also increased to 5.1%, up from 3.4% in the second quarter of last year.
Apple is focusing on targeting India, where the smartphone market is growing. Since last year, Apple has been producing the latest smartphone, the iPhone 14, in India, and in April this year, it opened its first Apple Store in India, actively pursuing its strategy. India is expected to surpass China this year to become the world's most populous country, and with an economic growth rate of around 6% annually, it is rapidly emerging as a market with great potential. In fact, the proportion of smartphones priced over $400 in the Indian market has more than doubled from 4% before COVID-19 to 10% currently.
Analyst Ankit Mahotra analyzed, "The growth of iPhones in India is the result of the growth of the premium market in India," adding, "Apple's overall strategy focusing on distribution and economic feasibility was also effective."
