iH Launches Pilot Operation of Eco-Friendly Food Waste Processing System at Guwol Asiad 7 Complex

Incheon Urban Corporation (iH) announced on the 16th that it is conducting a free pilot operation of an eco-friendly food waste treatment system at the 7th complex of Guwol Asiad Athletes' Village in Namdong-gu, Incheon.

This system maximizes the reduction rate of food waste through a combined process of a dryer and a plasma carbonizer, and recycles the byproducts by converting them into fertilizer. The waste heat generated from the plasma carbonizer is utilized to supply hot water to the fitness center within the complex, thereby reducing the communal utility costs of the complex.

The existing food waste treatment method for apartment complexes (collection-treatment method) caused significant inconvenience to residents due to continuous cost increases and odor and environmental pollution during the treatment process. Additionally, there was a lack of efforts to fundamentally reduce waste generation at the source, making recycling and resource recovery difficult even at the government level.

The byproducts generated from this eco-friendly food waste treatment system are composted into charcoal powder with a high organic content and recycled as fertilizer in vegetable gardens established within the complex.

iH plans to operate the system free of charge until September and then charge households at a rate lower than the food waste treatment costs of the respective district, providing direct benefits to the residents.

An iH official stated, "We are researching and developing various approaches to food waste treatment methods for apartment complexes," adding, "We will expand this to rental housing and other areas so that residents can benefit from reduced food waste treatment costs and the creation of eco-friendly residential complexes."
