Musk: "My AI is at the 'Embryo' Stage... To Catch Up with Google"

xAI to Explain Reasons for Undetected Dark Matter and Aliens

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, revealed that his newly established artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, will focus on exploring the secrets of the universe, such as solving mathematical problems and investigating the existence of extraterrestrials.

The Washington Post (WP) reported on the 14th (local time) that Musk, during a Twitter live audio event, presented his goal of building a superintelligent AI through xAI that helps solve complex math and science problems and understand the universe.

xAI is Elon Musk's AI company officially launched on the 12th. The company's research team includes many AI experts, such as Igor Babushkin, a former DeepMind engineer, as well as professionals from Google and Microsoft.

Musk emphasized that the ultimate goal of xAI is to "understand what on earth is going on." He explained that questions about the nature of dark matter in the universe or unexplained aspects of how gravity works could be among the mysteries xAI aims to clarify.

He also gave a lengthy explanation of the "Fermi paradox," a hypothesis suggesting that humanity has not yet discovered extraterrestrials because technological civilizations self-destruct or are destroyed by external forces before moving to other solar systems.

Jimmy Ba, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and a member of the research team, said the goal is to create AI that helps solve various problems humanity faces.

WP evaluated that Musk, during this event, appeared to focus on answering in-depth scientific questions rather than confronting companies like OpenAI, Google, or Microsoft head-on.

Musk said that xAI is still in the "embryonic" stage and that it will take time to catch up with OpenAI and Google. He also mentioned that xAI's AI will speak only the truth, which might upset people. Until now, Musk has criticized existing AI chatbots for being politically biased.

Musk has shown a somewhat negative attitude toward AI so far, warning in 2014 that superintelligent computers could pose an existential threat to humanity, likening them to demons.

He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with CEO Sam Altman and others but resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018 due to conflicts of interest related to Tesla's AI research and divested all his investment shares. Recently, he also opposed AI chatbots for excessively using Twitter's data for language training.

Meanwhile, Musk stated that xAI will closely collaborate with his other companies, Twitter and Tesla. He particularly emphasized that xAI's assistance will improve Tesla's autonomous driving capabilities.

WP reported that training large language models (LLMs) like AI chatbots requires enormous amounts of data and computing power, and Tesla already possesses significant computing resources used to develop autonomous driving technology.

During the event, Musk also mentioned that while xAI needs computing power, it will not be as much as other companies require.
