Flood damage continues in the central and southern inland areas of Gangwon Province.


According to the Gangwon Province Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the 15th, due to the recent heavy rain, there has been one casualty so far in Gangwon Province. Additionally, 31 residents from 22 households have temporarily evacuated to nearby village halls due to house flooding and rising river levels. Rockfall accidents and soil runoff occurred at three road locations, eight riverside parking lots were closed, and 48 national park trails were also closed.


At around 12:15 a.m., one resident who was trapped by soil runoff in Jucheon-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, was rescued by fire authorities, and at 7:14 a.m., 15 residents in Sangdong-eup, Yeongwol-gun, were urgently evacuated due to rising river levels.


Near Hwangdun-ri in Sillim-myeon, resident A (65) was swept away by a rapid current while crossing a village road and was rescued by 119 rescue workers. He was transported to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but ultimately passed away.


Road damage continues as soil runoff occurred on Provincial Road 404 in Guirae-myeon, Wonju-si, and Provincial Road 597 in Yongam-ri, Sillim-myeon, with restoration work underway. On Local Road 49 in Buron-myeon, Wonju-si, the road was washed away and is being repaired. Due to increased discharge from Chungju Dam, roads around the Namhan River in Buron-myeon are flooded and closed.


In Yeongwol, roads along rivers in Yeongwol-eup’s Yeonhari and Gimsatgat-myeon’s Oeryong-ri were flooded and closed to traffic. A 22-meter retaining wall collapsed on Local Road 88 in Oeryong-ri and is under repair.


Due to the rain, 14 roads in the Yeongwol area are currently closed, causing disruptions to city and village bus services.


In Yeongwol, where a heavy rain warning was issued, 140.4 mm of rain fell from midnight to 12:30 p.m. on the 15th, and the cumulative rainfall since the 13th reached 303.5 mm as of 3 p.m.


Cumulative rainfall in other areas besides Yeongwol includes 327.5 mm in Sillim (Wonju), 309.0 mm in Sabuk (Jeongseon), 278.0 mm in Pyeongchang, 254.5 mm in Guirae (Wonju), 155.5 mm in Hoengseong, and 120.2 mm in Chuncheon. On the east coast, rainfall was recorded as 63.0 mm in Wondeok (Samcheok), 37.5 mm in Okgae (Gangneung), 29.8 mm in Gangneung, 27.5 mm in Yangyang, 21.5 mm in Ganseong (Goseong), and 20.1 mm in Sokcho.
