Heavy Rain Concentrated in Seoul During Commute Home... Strong Rainfall of 30-80mm per Hour in Central Region Overnight

Heavy rain is expected to fall overnight, mainly in the central region.


As of 4 p.m., rain is falling mainly in the metropolitan area, Gangwon Yeongseo, Chungnam, southwestern Chungbuk, and northern Jeonbuk. A heavy rain advisory is in effect for the metropolitan area and Gangwon Yeongseo, where rain is pouring at a rate of about 20 to 40 mm per hour. In the metropolitan area alone, rain is falling at a rate of 30 to 40 mm per hour in eastern Gyeonggi, including Guri-si and Namyangju-si.

Precautions should be taken as there are concerns about rain damage such as landslides and collapses of retaining walls and terraces.


A 'caution' level landslide warning has been issued nationwide except for Jeju. Jeju is under an interest-level warning.


According to records from the Automatic Weather Station (AWS), the place with the highest rainfall until 4 p.m. today was Eocheongdo, Gunsan-si, Jeonbuk, with a precipitation amount of 99.5 mm. Next is Guri-si, Gyeonggi, with a daily rainfall of 88.5 mm so far.


Seoul also experienced heavy rain; in Seongdong-gu, 84 mm fell today. Based on hourly rainfall, the strongest rainfall intensity was also recorded at Eocheongdo, where 48 mm of rain fell from 4:37 a.m. to 5:37 a.m.


In the inland area, Osan-si, Gyeonggi, received 46.5 mm of rain from 10:32 a.m. to 11:32 a.m. In Seoul, the maximum hourly rainfall was 40.5 mm in Yeongdeungpo-gu from 1:42 p.m. to 2:42 p.m.


From now until the morning of the 14th, rain accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning will fall at a rate of 30 to 80 mm per hour in Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, inland central and northern Gangwon, and mountainous central and northern Gangwon. From night until the 15th, similar rain is expected in southern Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous southern Gangwon, Chungcheong, Honam, and northern inland Gyeongbuk.


In the metropolitan area alone, a well-developed rain cloud band will be reintroduced from the central West Sea, bringing heavy rain around 6 p.m. to Incheon and the western coast of Gyeonggi, followed by Seoul.


Expected rainfall until the 15th is 100 to 250 mm in the central region (excluding Gangwon East Coast), Jeonbuk, and northern inland Gyeongbuk; 50 to 150 mm in Gangwon East Coast, Jeonnam, and Yeongnam (excluding northern inland Gyeongbuk); and 5 to 60 mm in Jeju.


Areas with heavy rainfall by region are expected to receive over 400 mm in Chungnam and Jeonbuk; over 300 mm in southern Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous southern Gangwon, Chungbuk, and northern inland Gyeongbuk; and over 200 mm in Jeonnam.


Strong winds with instantaneous wind speeds exceeding 70 km/h (20 m/s) are expected along the West Coast, Gangwon Yeongdong, eastern coast of Gyeongbuk, and Jeju mountainous areas until the 15th. In the Gangwon mountainous area and Jeju mountainous area, instantaneous wind speeds will exceed 90 km/h (25 m/s). In other regions, instantaneous wind speeds will exceed 55 km/h (15 m/s).


The stationary front will oscillate north and south until the 20th, bringing rain nationwide.


The stationary front is expected to be located in the southern region on the 15th and 16th, Chungcheong on the 17th, northern Gyeonggi to North Korea on the 18th, and Honam to Chungcheong to Gangwon on the 19th, but there is high variability in the forecast.
