Designation of Gwangsan-gu as the 3rd Phase Education Internationalization Zone
Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City has been designated as the 3rd phase (2023?2027) Education Internationalization Special Zone. This is expected to give momentum to various international exchange projects aimed at fostering global talents.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education submitted an application for the designation of the ‘Gwangsan-gu Education Internationalization Special Zone’ to the Ministry of Education on May 30, in cooperation with Gwangju City and Gwangsan-gu.
After the Ministry of Education’s review of the plan, face-to-face evaluation, and the Education Internationalization Special Zone deliberation process, the final selection was made. Nationwide, many metropolitan and provincial offices of education showed great interest and applied, resulting in high competition for the 3rd phase special zone designation.
The ‘Gwangsan-gu Education Internationalization Special Zone’ project type includes ▲Global Citizen Cultivation ▲Global Teacher Development ▲Overseas Talent Attraction, which aligns with the major international exchange projects that the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has been promoting for students and teachers over the past year. It is expected that internationalization-related projects will create a synergistic effect going forward.
Since the inauguration of Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has implemented various educational policies to nurture ‘global talents with creativity and a warm-hearted global citizenship consciousness.’
In particular, proactive initiatives have been carried out such as diverse student international exchange activities including the ‘Student Global Leader World Tour Program,’ teacher global competency enhancement training, and multicultural education activation projects through the establishment and operation of the Songjeong Dagachi Center.
Additionally, efforts have been made in various ways, including establishing a cooperative system with Gwangju City and Gwangsan-gu for the designation of the Education Internationalization Special Zone.
As a follow-up, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education plans to collaborate with Gwangju City and Gwangsan-gu to prepare a detailed implementation plan for the Gwangsan-gu Education Internationalization Special Zone. After expert consulting, it will be submitted to the Ministry of Education in August.
Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon stated, “The designation of the 3rd phase Gwangsan-gu Education Internationalization Special Zone is a great achievement for Gwangju education and a meaningful opportunity for its advancement. We will do our best to nurture global talents with a global citizenship consciousness, the vision of the Gwangsan-gu Education Internationalization Special Zone, in cooperation with Gwangsan-gu and Gwangju City.”
