Suwon AK Plaza Branch to Open Next Month... Eight Screening Rooms Operated
Megabox's Second Largest Location, Metropolitan Area Hub
Starfield Suwon Branch to Open as Early as Year-End
Megabox is emerging as a typhoon eye that will lead the metropolitan area cinema industry. It is opening the Suwon AK Plaza branch and Starfield Suwon branch one after another, equipped with the latest screening systems.
According to Megabox on the 12th, the Suwon AK Plaza branch will open next month. It is a multiplex with eight screening rooms located in Suwon Station. Situated in the heart of a busy urban area with high foot traffic, high sales are expected. In fact, CGV, which has operated a cinema at this location for the past 20 years, has made long-term investments without hesitation. It has established three rare special screening rooms (IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX) and also underwent renovation work in 2015. However, in last year's bidding for the cinema operator at Suwon Station conducted by AK Plaza, Megabox lost and was not selected as the preferred negotiation partner.
The new owner, Megabox, is applying the latest screening systems on a large scale. The most eye-catching screening room is undoubtedly the Dolby Cinema, equipped with both 'Dolby Vision' and 'Dolby Atmos.' It induces complete movie immersion with the best image quality and vivid sound. Hollywood producers and directors in the U.S. even check the video and sound quality of new releases here.
'Dolby Vision' is a video technology that implements vivid image quality using a dual 4K laser and HDR (High Dynamic Range) projector system. It is twice as bright as a regular screen and has about 500 times higher contrast ratio. It delivers every scene of the movie with excellent color, showing dark scenes even darker. 'Dolby Atmos' is a technology that delivers sound in three-dimensional space, including above the audience's heads, following the movements on the screen. It adds vivid sound to provide an intense and rich entertainment experience.
Currently, Megabox operates Dolby Cinema only at five locations: COEX, Anseong Starfield, Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science, Daegu Shinsegae (Dongdaegu), and Namyangju Hyundai Outlet Stay1. This is because Dolby Laboratories in the U.S. does not allow establishment unless detailed conditions such as securing a full viewing angle from all seats, minimizing light reflection, and clear sound transmission are met. A Megabox official said, "We are building the Suwon AK Plaza branch as the second largest scale in Korea after the COEX branch," adding, "We plan to operate it as a metropolitan hub by applying the latest projection systems to other screening rooms as well."
The Starfield Suwon branch, where building construction is currently nearing completion, is scheduled to open as early as the end of the year. With a total floor area of 331,000㎡ (100,127.5 pyeong), it plans to provide both the latest screening systems and comfortable resting spaces simultaneously. A Megabox official said, "We are preparing spaces that will bring new cultural vitality to the local community as well as special screening rooms such as the MX theater." The MX theater is optimized for movie sound. It offers three-dimensional sound by combining sixty-nine Meyer speakers used in Carnegie Hall and the Opera House with 'Dolby Atmos.' It also features screen brightness and wide seating that meet the standards of the Digital Cinema Initiatives, making it very popular among movie fans.
