Dongdaemun-gu Lunchbox Basic Meal Cost Unit Price 4000→ 6000 Won Increase

Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that starting from July this year, it will increase the basic meal cost for free meal lunchboxes from 4,000 KRW to 6,000 KRW by allocating additional district funds to provide more nutritious food to vulnerable elderly residents in the district.

This increase adds 2,000 KRW of district funds to the basic meal cost of 4,000 KRW supported by the city, marking a groundbreaking increase at the highest level in Seoul.

The increased basic meal cost will apply to 345 elderly recipients who receive lunchbox deliveries from the lunchbox production center and local welfare centers.

In May, to support healthy aging by improving the nutritional status of low-income elderly and to facilitate the smooth operation of the lunchbox delivery project, the district established Seoul’s first ‘Donghaeng Lunchbox Production Center,’ managing everything from lunchbox preparation to delivery.

The elderly who received lunchboxes made at the Donghaeng Lunchbox Production Center expressed their gratitude multiple times, saying, “The freshly cooked warm rice is very delicious, and we are thankful. We truly appreciate the careful attention and consideration.”

Dongdaemun-gu plans to expand support for the entire free meal service for the elderly next year, starting with the establishment of the Donghaeng Lunchbox Production Center and the increase in the basic meal cost this year, including senior citizen cafeterias and side dish deliveries.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “We will provide nutritious food for the health of socially vulnerable elderly,” and added, “We will continue to carefully watch over the elderly so they are not isolated and can live together with their neighbors, and do our best to promote various elderly welfare and cultural projects.”
