Seongdong-gu Expands Thumbs-Up Laundry Service to 17 Neighborhoods for Low-Income Single-Person Households
Expanding laundry pickup and washing service for low-income residents of goshiwon and single-person households to 17 neighborhoods
A twofold project improving hygiene for single-person households and creating jobs for vulnerable groups
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will expand the pilot project of the 'Thumbs-Up Laundry Service' to all 17 neighborhoods.
Previously, the service operated through the Seongdong Regional Self-Support Center, which ran a laundromat business for vulnerable groups, where eligible users brought their laundry to be washed free of charge. In 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the 'Thumbs-Up Laundry Service' was piloted targeting residents of 122 goshiwons and lodging facilities, as well as single-person households in vulnerable groups in three neighborhoods including Yongdap-dong and Songjeong-dong.
This is a non-face-to-face one-stop service where the district directly visits homes to collect laundry, wash it, and deliver it back.
Due to high satisfaction among users of the Thumbs-Up Laundry Service, Seongdong-gu will expand the service to all 17 neighborhoods starting in July. Last year, a total of 1,309 laundry services were provided, including 940 cases for single-person households and 369 cases for goshiwon residents.
Mr. Kim, in his 60s living in Majang-dong, expressed satisfaction, saying, "I couldn't wash thick winter blankets at home, and even if I did, I had no space to dry them, so I was worried. Having them washed and delivered is very convenient and great."
Seongdong-gu conducts ▲individual counseling ▲case management ▲customized education to help residents participating in self-support projects work with pride. In addition to laundry services, the district plans to lead job creation by discovering various projects that improve residents' quality of life, such as disinfection, cleaning, and residential environment improvement.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "The Thumbs-Up Laundry Service improves the hygiene environment of vulnerable single-person households living in poor conditions and provides jobs for low-income groups, achieving a twofold effect. We will continue to discover and support various welfare services that enhance the quality of life for our residents."
