Sunchang-gun Promotes 'Traditional Market Modernization Project'... Installation of Rain Shelters and More

Sunchang-gun, Jeonbuk Province, will invest 1.1 billion KRW to install rain shelters that block rain, snow, and sunlight, improving convenience for users and merchants of Sunchang Traditional Market as well as creating a more pleasant shopping environment.

On the 10th, the county announced that it will promote three modernization projects to enhance convenience for users and merchants of Sunchang Traditional Market, including the installation of flame-retardant rain shelters (arcade roofs), separation of stormwater and sewage pipes, and installation of city gas.

This project will be carried out with a total budget of 1.1 billion KRW, including 170 million KRW secured from being selected in the ‘2023 Traditional Market Facility Modernization Contest.’

The county plans to install arch-shaped rain shelters made of flame-retardant materials over a 2,027㎡ area of the market’s main roads, investing 840 million KRW.

By completing the rain shelter installation before winter, the environment will be improved to enable comfortable shopping for market users, and merchants will be able to operate normally even in bad weather, revitalizing the stagnant local economy.

With 170 million KRW secured from the contest project, 142 meters of sewage pipes will be laid and connected to the sewer system to prevent wastewater from restaurants and other establishments from flowing into stormwater pipes, thereby resolving odor problems within the market.

Additionally, 150 million KRW will be invested to install city gas, which will reduce the risk of gas fires?a common safety hazard in traditional markets?and supply city gas to merchants at a low cost, easing their fuel expenses.

County Governor Choi Young-il said, “The installation of rain shelters and modernization of facilities at Sunchang Market this year is a long-cherished wish of residents and merchants, and we will strive to complete the construction safely and successfully. I hope this project will greatly contribute to revitalizing the traditional market, which is the foundation of the local economy.”
