Fasting Stopped After 15 Days
Lee Jae-myung Proposes 'Control Tower' Chief Role
Woo Won-sik, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who had been fasting to stop the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, ended his fast after 15 days.
On the 10th, Woo stated in a press release, "This morning, Party Leader Lee Jae-myung visited the fasting protest site," adding, "He expressed concern for my health and said that the party should unite and prepare for a bigger fight to stop the discharge of contaminated water."
He continued, "I came this far with the thought that I must clearly express opposition on behalf of the people," and said, "I believe that through the 15-day fasting protest, we have widely informed Japan and countries around the world of the overwhelming public opposition."
He also said, "Yesterday, I met with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), and was able to strongly convey the concerns and stance of the Democratic Party and our people to the IAEA," adding, "We will continue to fight until strong additional verification that leaves no doubt, even as small as a grain of rice, and practical measures to stop the discharge are established."
Woo emphasized, "Following the party's recommendation, I will stop the fasting protest and continue a bigger fight to protect the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea and the safety of its people," and sincerely thanked everyone who supported him so far.
Earlier that morning, it was reported that Party Leader Lee proposed to Woo to end the fasting protest and lead a ‘control tower’ for long-term struggle. The plan includes all response activities such as the party’s Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Marine Dumping Countermeasures Committee, aiming for an organized response.
