Election Results Arbitrarily Altered to Make 2nd Place 1st
Attempted Self-Harm After Incident... Referred to Prosecution
An elementary school teacher who manipulated the results of the student council election due to favoritism toward a specific student has been referred to the prosecution.
On the 6th, the police announced that they had sent Teacher A from an elementary school in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, to the prosecution without detention on charges including obstruction of official duties by deception. A is accused of arbitrarily altering the election results on December 29 last year to declare a student with fewer votes as the president in the student council election.
At the time, two 5th-grade students ran for the student council election. The school announced that Student B received 56 votes and Student C received 53 votes, declaring Student B the winner based on the election results. However, it was reported that the parents of the losing Student C noticed discrepancies due to differences in the format of the voting results and raised objections to the school and the Gunsan City Election Commission.
The election utilized an electronic voting system supported by the Gunsan City Election Commission. According to the commission's investigation, it was confirmed that the losing Student C actually received 3 more votes. The school later corrected the counting results after consulting with the parents of both students.
It was later revealed that the results had been manipulated by Teacher A. It was reported that A attempted self-harm immediately after the incident surfaced and was hospitalized, then discharged after several months. In the police investigation, A admitted all charges, stating, "I did it because I favored a specific student."
The school issued a statement saying, "We are providing psychological support programs to the two students and their parents who have suffered great emotional distress," and added, "This incident has nothing to do with the two students, and the intentions of the teacher in charge will be clarified through an audit."
