Mother Who Secretly Buried Daughter Without Birth Registration Urgently Arrested (Comprehensive)

A mother who secretly buried her daughter, who died just one day after birth, in a garden without registering the birth or holding a funeral has been arrested by the police.

The Women and Juvenile Investigation Unit of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 6th that they have urgently detained a woman in her 40s, identified as Ms. A, on suspicion of abandoning a corpse and are currently investigating her.

Ms. A is suspected of secretly burying her daughter, Ms. B, who was born at a hospital in Incheon in August 2016 and died the next day, in a garden in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province without any funeral procedures.

The police received information from Michuhol District in Incheon about a child with only birth records but no birth registration and, after investigation, urgently detained Ms. A yesterday afternoon.

During the police investigation, Ms. A stated that "the baby died shortly after birth, so I just thought to bury her in the ground without a funeral." At the time of giving birth, she was separated from her husband and later divorced.

The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for Ms. A after investigating the circumstances of Ms. B’s death with Ms. A and her ex-husband.

Meanwhile, as the government is conducting a full investigation into cases of 'unregistered births,' the number of unregistered children for whom local governments in Incheon have requested police investigations or whereabouts checks has reached 60 as of yesterday.

In addition to Ms. A, the police have also booked one mother who abandoned a child in a baby box.
