National Airport Noise Countermeasures Special Committee Officially Launches

National Metropolitan Council Members Tackle Airport Noise Issues with Expertise, Passion, and Boldness

The Special Committee on Airport Noise Countermeasures under the Korea Council of Chairs of Metropolitan and Provincial Councils held a commissioning ceremony and pledged to begin full-scale activities.

The Special Committee on Airport Noise Countermeasures was formed by inviting council members from each metropolitan and provincial council who are working to resolve airport noise issues, and it is receiving special attention as a nationwide committee.

Attendees included ▲Woo Hyung-chan, Vice Chairman of Seoul Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party) ▲Park So-young, Member of Daegu Metropolitan Council (People Power Party) ▲Shin Young-hee, Member of Incheon Metropolitan Council (People Power Party) ▲Myeong Jin, Member of Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party) ▲Ahn Kyung-ja, Member of Daejeon Metropolitan Council (People Power Party) ▲Park Sang-hyun, Member of Gyeonggi Provincial Council (Democratic Party) ▲Hong Won-gil, Member of Gyeonggi Provincial Council (People Power Party) ▲Choi Kyu-man, Member of Gangwon Provincial Council (People Power Party) ▲Choi Mu-gyeong, Member of Jeollanam-do Provincial Council (Democratic Party) ▲Kim Hwang-guk, Vice Chairman of Jeju Provincial Council (People Power Party).

Kim Hyun-ki, Chairman of the Korea Council of Chairs of Metropolitan and Provincial Councils and Chair of Seoul Metropolitan Council, presented the commissioning certificates to the Special Committee on Airport Noise and requested responsible roles and activities from the committee, expressing unwavering support and backing for the nationwide special committee.

At the commissioning ceremony, Kim Hwang-guk, Vice Chairman of Jeju Provincial Council, was appointed as Chair of the committee; regional vice chairs were appointed as Hong Won-gil for the Capital Region, Ahn Kyung-ja for the Chungcheong Region, Choi Mu-gyeong for the Honam Region, and Park So-young for the Yeongnam Region. Commissioned members included Woo Hyung-chan, Vice Chairman of Seoul Metropolitan Council; Lee Bok-jo, Member of Busan Metropolitan Council; Shin Young-hee, Member of Incheon Metropolitan Council; Jeong Chi-rak, Member of Ulsan Metropolitan Council; Park Sang-hyun, Member of Gyeonggi Provincial Council; and Choi Hak-beom, Vice Chairman of Gyeongnam Provincial Council.

Kim Hwang-guk, Chair of the Special Committee on Airport Noise, emphasized the solidarity and consultation among commissioned members from each region for future activities, sharing urgent regional issues and discussing agenda items such as proposing solutions to problems.

Woo Hyung-chan, Vice Chairman of Seoul Metropolitan Council, acknowledged the importance and role of airports due to Korea’s geographical characteristics but requested efforts to minimize damage and seek new alternatives.

He then pledged, together with members of the nationwide Special Committee on Airport Noise Countermeasures, to represent the voices of citizens nationwide calling for solutions to airport noise problems and to propose alternatives.

Finally, the nationwide Special Committee on Airport Noise Countermeasures concluded by promising to hold its second meeting on September 1 at Jeju Provincial Council to actively and realistically discuss specific countermeasures for airport noise-affected areas.
