The Late Grandmother Park Hae-ok's Forced Labor Compensation Deposit, Jeonju District Court Decides 'Dismissal'

Failure to Comply with Recommendation to Correct Heir Status under Civil Law

On the 4th, Gwangju District Court Also Rejected and Returned

Attention on Deposit Results of Remaining Two at Suwon District Court

The Jeonju District Court, following the Gwangju District Court, also rejected the deposit of compensation money for forced labor victims who did not accept the government's proposed 'third-party payment' solution for forced mobilization during Japanese colonial rule.

On the 5th, the Jeonju District Court announced that it had dismissed the deposit application submitted on the 3rd by the Foundation for the Support of Victims of Forced Mobilization during Japanese Colonial Rule concerning the late forced labor victim, grandmother Park Hae-ok.

Along with the deposit on the 3rd, the foundation submitted a certified letter to the court stating that the victim's side refused the third-party payment. On the same day, the court recommended corrections, changing the designated deposit recipient from the late grandmother Park Hae-ok to her living heirs and requested submission of supporting documents such as family relation certificates by the 4th.

Since the foundation did not supplement the related documents, the court ultimately decided not to accept the deposit application. Under civil law, the deceased grandmother Park cannot be the deposit heir.

Earlier, on the 4th, the Gwangju District Court also dismissed and returned deposit applications for surviving victims grandmother Yang Geum-deok and grandfather Lee Chun-sik. The reason for dismissal was the refusal of the deposit recipient, and the return was due to incomplete documents.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated regarding the Gwangju District Court's decision, "We will immediately initiate an objection procedure to seek the court's correct judgment." There has been no news yet of the foundation filing an objection to this decision.

Meanwhile, the government has deposited compensation for the remaining two plaintiffs who did not accept the 'third-party payment' solution at the Suwon District Court, which has jurisdiction over the heirs' addresses, drawing attention to the outcome. The subjects are two children of the deceased victims, grandfather Jeong Chang-hee and grandmother Park Hae-ok, who are understood to reside in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
