According to the police and Lee Cheon-soo on the 5th, Lee directly caught and handed over to the police a hit-and-run driver who caused a drunk driving accident and fled near Dongjak Station on Olympic-daero in Seoul late afternoon on the 4th.
On that day, while returning home after filming, Lee witnessed an elderly taxi driver shouting, "Please catch that person," on Olympic-daero. The drunk driver had collided with the taxi and was fleeing on foot, leaving the vehicle behind to avoid being caught for drunk driving.
Lee got out of his car and chased the suspect, and during this process, his manager, also a former soccer player, got out to help catch the suspect. Despite the rain, Lee sprinted about 1 km on Olympic-daero to catch the suspect. Afterwards, the police, who arrived following the taxi driver's report, took the drunk hit-and-run driver into custody.
At the time, the driver's blood alcohol concentration was above the license cancellation threshold (0.08%). The police plan to investigate the circumstances of the accident and have booked the driver on charges including violation of the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (hit-and-run causing injury).
Lee Cheon-soo was a key player in the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup semifinal run and played for Ulsan Hyundai Tigers, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord Rotterdam, and Incheon United FC. After retiring, Lee has been active as a broadcaster appearing on entertainment programs.
Meanwhile, on the 4th, a case occurred where a vehicle of a first-time drunk driving offender was seized. Osan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province received and seized a QM6 vehicle voluntarily submitted by A (25), who was arrested on charges including violation of the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (hit-and-run causing death).
A is accused of drunk driving on the road in front of Osan Post Office in Osan City, Gyeonggi Province, on the 27th of last month, hitting six pedestrians crossing a crosswalk and fleeing the scene.
This seizure is part of the 'Measures to Eradicate Recidivism of Habitual Drunk Drivers and Other Malicious Offenders' implemented by the prosecution and police since the 1st. The prosecution and police plan to continue confiscating vehicles even for first-time offenders if multiple deaths or injuries occur due to drunk driving accidents.
