Guro-gu Expands Support for Heatwave Shelters... Smooth Operation Until September
Number of Locations Increased Compared to Last Year, Total 252 Open ... Expanded Cooling Cost Support for Senior Centers and Welfare Facilities
20% Discount on Beverages at Cafe Gaebong Until August ... Full Support for Increased Safety Shelter Room Fees
Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) continues to operate heatwave shelters smoothly.
Guro-gu announced on the 5th, "This year, the heatwave warning criteria have changed to apparent temperature, and temperatures are expected to be higher than average, resulting in many heatwave days in July and August. To prepare for this, we have expanded the support plan for heatwave shelters in various ways before operation."
This year, the district added Guro Salmteo Regional Self-Support Center and Cafe Gaebong as heatwave shelters, opening a total of 252 locations, 9 more than last year, including ▲200 senior centers ▲6 welfare facilities ▲16 community service centers ▲26 financial institutions ▲4 private facilities including safety shelters.
Considering the recent rise in electricity bills and consumer prices causing continuous economic burdens, cooling cost support for senior centers and welfare facilities designated as heatwave shelters has also been increased by 10%.
At Cafe Gaebong, beverages are offered at a 20% discount to seniors aged 65 and over using the heatwave shelter until next month. Cafe Gaebong is part of the senior job market-type business group where seniors directly prepare and sell coffee.
Heatwave shelters open to everyone operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and when a heatwave warning is issued, extended shelters such as community service centers operate until 9 p.m.
In June, the district signed a business agreement to operate night shelters with two local hotels: Coop City Hotel (Oryu 1-dong) and Kokomo Hotel (Guro 5-dong).
Accordingly, room fees are fully supported at the same level as last year, allowing use without additional costs despite increased room rates. Breakfast is also provided at Coop City Hotel among the safety shelters.
Safety shelters are operated for vulnerable residents aged 65 and over living in small rooms, goshiwon, or those receiving basic livelihood benefits. On weekdays, residents can apply at their community service center on the day a heatwave warning is issued and stay up to 2 nights in a double room.
A Guro-gu official stated, "We plan to continue expanding support by mobilizing administrative power to meet residents' needs. We will do our best to help residents spend the summer safely and healthily."
