On the same day, Secretary General Stoltenberg stated on his social media (SNS), "I am honored that NATO member countries have decided to extend my term until October 1, 2024."

Stoltenberg, who is from Norway, served twice as Prime Minister before being elected as NATO Secretary General for a four-year term in 2014. He successfully extended his term once, and last year, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, his term was extended by an additional year, making him the longest-serving Secretary General.

Furthermore, with this additional extension, Secretary General Stoltenberg is guaranteed a full 10-year term. Meanwhile, NATO also announced on the same day that the North Atlantic Council (NAC) agreed to extend Stoltenberg's term. The extension will be finally approved at the NATO summit scheduled for the 11th to 12th.
