Guidance on Ssireum Techniques and Match Experience Activities
Conducted Together with Bandalgom Sports Club
The Bandyalgom Ssireum Team of Gurye-gun Office in Jeollanam-do has launched a talent donation project called the ‘Visiting Ssireum Classroom’ for students of Yongbang Elementary School.
The ‘Visiting Ssireum Classroom’ was held on June 30 at the Gurye Public Stadium for 19 third and fourth graders from Yongbang Elementary School, with participation from the Gurye-gun Bandyalgom Sports Club as well.
Kim Songhwan, the director of the Bandyalgom Ssireum Team, began the classroom with lessons on the history and etiquette of ssireum. Then, the team players demonstrated various techniques such as Eongdeongbaejigi, and allowed the students to try applying the techniques on each other, helping the participating students develop an interest in ssireum.
Kim Sunho, the county governor, said, “By allowing local students to directly experience ssireum, a traditional culture of our people and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, we will continue to operate the ssireum classroom so that ssireum as a recreational sport can be revitalized and the training of successors can be actively promoted.”
Meanwhile, the Bandyalgom Ssireum Team has been conducting the ssireum classroom for four years since 2020 to foster successors and expand the base of ssireum. They are also working hard to discover student athletes in connection with the Bandyalgom Ssireum Sports Club, a school-linked single-sport (ssireum) sports club.
