Powernet announced on the 3rd that it is collaborating with CEL, a Chinese LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cell specialist company, to develop battery pack modules with the goal of participating in the government’s battery-related demonstration project.
On the 21st of last month, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the promotion of a demonstration project for electric two-wheeler sharing stations (battery swapping systems) to respond to the eco-friendly transition of the automobile industry and to revitalize the domestic electric two-wheeler industry. In line with this, Powernet is developing the country’s first “standard battery pack applying LFP.”
Powernet plans to apply LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, not the commonly used Li-ion (Lithium-ion) batteries in the market, and to establish a foundation for sustainable growth through market expansion with differentiated standard products by acquiring KS certification in accordance with the “mandatory national standard for swappable batteries” enacted last year.
A Powernet official stated, “The product currently under development overcomes the low energy density drawback of lithium iron phosphate by applying a standard cell with the same capacity and size as lithium-ion, resulting in a battery pack that outperforms existing market products in all aspects including safety, lifespan, and price. We expect that once KS certification is completed, it will secure sufficient competitiveness in the market.”
He added, “In addition to this development, we are concurrently working on developing portable battery power supplies for mobile appliances, and according to the mid- to long-term roadmap established this year, we will gradually expand our battery business. We also plan to lay the groundwork for growth as a company practicing ESG through eco-friendly businesses such as developing products applying next-generation power semiconductors (GaN) while continuously securing future growth engines.”
