Squid Bare-Hand Catcher Draws Attention
Beach Soccer Tournament and More Held
Twenty-three beaches along the East Coast of Gyeongbuk will open sequentially starting from the 14th.
Beaches in Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin will operate from the 14th to August 20th, while beaches in Pohang will be open from the 15th to August 27th.
This year, as more tourists are expected compared to last year, Gyeongbuk Province and the respective cities and counties plan to prepare convenience facilities such as showers, restrooms, and foot-washing stations, and conduct safety inspections of multi-use facilities ahead of the openings.
To prepare for various accidents such as drowning incidents and jellyfish stings that may occur during water activities, lifeguards will be deployed, and an emergency response system has been established in cooperation with related organizations such as the Coast Guard and fire stations to respond promptly on-site in case of emergencies.
Additionally, to offer tourists visiting Gyeongbuk unique experiences and enjoyment, various content and events have been prepared with great care to welcome visitors.
First, in Pohang, events such as the Sand Festival (Yeongildae Beach) will be held from the 22nd to August 7th, along with squid hand-catching (Guryongpo Beach), clam digging experiences (Hwajin and Dogu Beaches), and traditional fishing net experiences (Wolpo Beach).
The International Marine Leisure Week (KIMA WEEK, July to August), where visitors can enjoy marine sports experiences and competitions, will also be held throughout Pohang.
Furthermore, from August 11th to 14th, the National Marine Sports Festival will take place at Yeongildae Beach and the Hyeongsan River area.
At Gyeongju Gwansung Beach, a midsummer night music festival will be held in July, offering beautiful melodies to tourists visiting Gyeongju.
At Yeongdeok Goraebul Beach, a beach soccer tournament will be held from late July to early August, and at Uljin Hupo Beach, the National Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place from the 29th to 30th.
Meanwhile, for those who want to enjoy beaches leisurely with family, five beaches with beautiful surrounding scenery are recommended: Hwajin Beach and Dogu Beach in Pohang, Oryu Beach in Gyeongju, Hajeo Beach in Yeongdeok, and Nagok Beach in Uljin County.
In addition, to prepare for the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, radiation inspections will be conducted before the opening of Pohang Yeongildae Beach and Yeongdeok Jangsa Beach, which attract many visitors, and the results will be announced to ensure visitors can use the beaches with peace of mind.
Lee Kyung-gon, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau at the East Coast Regional Headquarters of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “We have prepared various sights and activities for visitors to the East Coast beaches of Gyeongbuk,” adding, “Gyeongbuk Province will do its best to create clean and safe beaches.”
