"Purpose of Resolving Data Scraping and System Manipulation"
Twitter has started to reduce its free services.
Elon Musk, Twitter chairman and chief technology officer (CTO), announced on his Twitter account on the 1st (local time) that "Twitter Blue users are limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts (those not using Twitter Blue) are limited to 600 posts, and new users are limited to 300 posts per day." Twitter Blue is a paid service costing 10,400 KRW per month.
Musk explained that this was a "temporary restriction measure to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation." However, after users expressed strong dissatisfaction, he revised the limits to 8,000 posts, 800 posts, and 400 posts respectively. With a single statement from Musk, Twitter’s policies, affecting over 300 million users, wavered like a reed in the wind.
Twitter experienced access issues before and after announcing the post access restrictions. According to Downdetector, a website that tracks access errors, there were 7,432 reports of access problems that day. Since the previous day, Twitter has blocked access through the search bar online. Previously, users without accounts could view Twitter’s public content through search without logging in. Now, users must log in with a Twitter account to view posts.
After acquiring Twitter, Musk conducted massive layoffs and resignations, cutting 75% of the entire workforce. According to the advertising analytics firm Standard Media Index on January 16, Twitter’s advertising revenue during the month following Musk’s acquisition dropped by 46% compared to the same period last year.
