Prepared Semiconductor City Gumi ... Training 20,000 Skilled Professionals with Gyeongbuk Province

‘Gyeongbuk Semiconductor Industry Ultra-Gap Skilled Workforce Training Project’

Establishing Response Strategies to Secure Workforce for Semiconductor Specialized Complex

The semiconductor specialized complex designation in Gumi requires securing manpower, and a semiconductor expert workforce development project aimed at achieving a super-gap in Gyeongbuk's semiconductor industry will be actively promoted.

On the 30th, Gyeongbuk Province and Gumi City held a launch ceremony for the ‘Gyeongbuk Semiconductor Industry Super-Gap Expert Workforce Development Project’ at GumiCO, marking the first step. About 200 people attended the ceremony, including Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Mayor Kim Jang-ho, representatives from Gumi economic organizations, educational institutions, and research institutes.

The semiconductor expert workforce development project is part of the ‘Gyeongbuk Semiconductor Industry Super-Gap Promotion Plan’ announced by Gyeongbuk Province last year. It aims to train 20,000 specialized personnel over 10 years to address the shortage of local semiconductor industry workforce when designated as a ‘National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex.’

This project provides education through ▲supporting corporate manpower to meet the workforce demand of local semiconductor-related companies ▲training specialized talents by sharing semiconductor major practical courses at universities and expanding semiconductor process education at specialized high schools ▲advanced workforce development courses to support training of graduate students (master’s and doctoral) and corporate R&D personnel.

The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association forecasts that the semiconductor industry workforce will increase from about 177,000 currently to about 304,000 in 10 years, creating an additional demand of 127,000 personnel. Meanwhile, the city has been laying the foundation to secure key personnel for achieving a super-gap in the semiconductor industry.

In February, the city signed a ‘Semiconductor Industry (Specialized Complex) Promotion Support Business Agreement’ with local educational institutions, companies, and research institutes to establish an industry-academia-research-government cooperation system by developing customized curricula for workforce training and expanding exchanges of R&D specialized personnel. The city has also continuously expanded the base for semiconductor industry talent development through the Gyeongbuk National University Semiconductor Joint Research Institute, selection of semiconductor specialized universities, establishment of a contract department between DGIST and Samsung Electronics Semiconductor, and opening of a semiconductor department at Daegu Catholic University.

Based on the integrated semiconductor materials and components industry, the city aims to achieve a semiconductor super-gap by building a core materials and components specialized complex that completes an ecosystem supplying semiconductor materials and components to semiconductor device companies in the metropolitan area and downstream demand industries.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “We are sparing no support from various sectors including local lawmakers, city council, and economic organizations to secure the designation of the specialized complex. We will do our best so that Gumi, Gyeongbuk, can be designated as a semiconductor specialized complex and play a leading role in achieving Korea’s semiconductor industry super-gap.”
