Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, marked his first year in office on July 1 by inspecting flood-prone facilities and reaffirming his commitment to resident safety.

He first visited the repair and reinforcement construction site of an apartment retaining wall in the area and the access road improvement project site at Daehyeonsan Reservoir Park, where Seoul’s first monorail will be installed, to check on the progress of the construction and meet with nearby residents to discuss any inconveniences.

Later, he visited the Euljiro area, where the queer festival is held, walking along the planned parade route to carefully inspect for any factors that might threaten the safety of the dense crowds. On this day, about 80 Jung-gu office employees were deployed on-site to maintain order and prevent safety accidents. Mayor Kim encouraged the staff working under the scorching heat of 33°C on the weekend.

Earlier, on June 20, the district held a disaster safety countermeasure briefing. Safety measures being implemented by 16 departments to prevent heatwave and flood damage were shared and thoroughly reviewed for any areas needing further attention.

On June 30, a ‘Thanks to You (愛)’ concert was held at the lawn plaza in front of Jung-gu Office, attended by over 200 residents and employees. The event celebrated the joint efforts of staff and residents over the past year, which have transformed Jung-gu into a more livable neighborhood. The day was especially meaningful as it marked the fulfillment of a 30-year wish of Jung-gu residents.

On the same day, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced the ‘New Height District Plan,’ which completely overhauls the height regulations in Seoul’s height-restricted zones. The areas around Namsan, previously regulated at 12m and 20m height limits, will now be managed with more detailed limits ranging from 20m up to 40m. In particular, the area around Yaksu Station will see a relaxation from the previous 20m limit to between 32m and 40m, considering the terrain differences.

This change enables improvements in the residential environment along the slopes of Namsan, which had been difficult to develop due to regulations, thus creating conditions for Jung-gu to advance as a more livable area.

On the morning of July 3, an employee assembly will be held to reflect on the efforts of the past year and share achievements. Afterwards, Mayor Kim plans to communicate with employees in their 20s and 30s at a caf? in ‘Hip Dang-dong’ (Hip Sindang-dong), sharing workplace concerns and fostering dialogue.

That same afternoon, he will visit local rental apartment senior centers and the Namdaemun gosiwon (small room) village to inspect for any vulnerabilities to heatwaves and heavy rains, and meet residents to check for any inconveniences in their daily lives. He will then visit Dasan Children’s Park’s Haedalmaji (sunrise viewing) community sports class to discuss ways the district can support residents’ healthy daily lives.

Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, stated, “Over the past year, residents and staff have worked together with one heart to make Jung-gu a better place to live. Moving forward, we will continue to listen carefully to residents’ voices, seek their opinions, and realize them, repaying their trust with even greater achievements.”
