Announcement of the '2023 Jisokganeung Gyeongyeong Bogo서'
Samsung Electronics' use of renewable energy increased by 65% compared to the previous year, and greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 2.35 million tons compared to the previous year.
Samsung Electronics announced its '2023 Sustainability Management Report' containing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) achievements on the 30th. The report includes the progress of the new environmental management strategy announced last year and the major activities over the past year.
The new environmental management strategy aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the Device Experience (DX) division by 2030, and the entire company, including the Device Solutions (DS) division, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
First, the DX division targets 100% renewable energy transition domestically and internationally by 2027. Accordingly, last year, 100% renewable energy use was achieved at business sites in Vietnam, India, and Brazil.
Samsung Electronics' renewable energy usage last year was 8,704 GWh, a 65% increase compared to the previous year. Over the past five years, renewable energy usage has increased by an average of 59% annually.
Along with expanding renewable energy use, reducing semiconductor process gases, and improving manufacturing process efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by approximately 2.35 million tons last year.
The DS division plans to develop innovative technologies to improve process gas treatment efficiency by 2030 and expand carbon emission reduction facilities applying these technologies to production lines.
Last year's reused water volume was 116.59 million tons, a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Samsung Electronics explained that this is the result of continuous water resource-saving efforts such as replacing aging equipment, process improvements, and establishing reuse systems.
Additionally, to promote resource circulation of electronic products, the company set a goal to apply recycled resin to 50% of plastic parts by 2030 and to all plastic parts by 2050.
Samsung Electronics stated, "The amount of plastic using recycled resin last year tripled compared to the previous year."
