Commemorating the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Promoting Disabled Sports Activities
Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-cheol) announced on the 29th that it held the opening ceremony of the Bandabi Sports Center, the first of its kind in Jeollanam-do.
The Bandabi Sports Center is being promoted as a policy by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to commemorate the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and to revitalize sports for people with disabilities.
This project aims to establish 150 Bandabi Sports Centers nationwide by 2025.
Gokseong-gun applied for the national subsidy project for the sports center named after Bandabi, the mascot of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and the project was confirmed in 2019.
From 2019 to 2022, a total project cost of 6.6 billion KRW was invested, including 3 billion KRW from the national government and 3.6 billion KRW from the county government over approximately four years. The Bandabi Sports Center, with a total floor area of 1,992㎡, consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors, was completed in December last year.
The Bandabi Sports Center is equipped with one indoor gymnasium, a fitness room, a lawn bowls court, family shower rooms, restrooms exclusively for people with disabilities, the office of the Gokseong-gun Disabled Sports Association, and the office of the Gokseong-gun Physical Disability Association, among other facilities.
Through this, a community sports culture space has been created where people with and without disabilities can come together to improve physical fitness and enjoy healthy leisure activities.
A Gokseong-gun official said, “We hope that the Gokseong-gun Bandabi Sports Center will establish itself as a representative sports facility where people with and without disabilities can interact together. We also consider it very meaningful that it is the first to open in Jeollanam-do. We thank everyone who has shown deep interest and cooperation for the construction project and hope for extensive use.”
