Jung-gu, Seoul, Supports 16 Multicultural Families with 1 Million Won Settlement Incentive Each, First Among Seoul Autonomous Districts
In Collaboration with Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance's Social Contribution Activities, Delivered through the Community Chest of Korea
On the 21st, a Ceremony Held to Present Incentives to Families Who Completed Adaptation Programs Including Family Communication Education and Cooking Classes
Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) provided settlement incentives to multicultural families for the first time among Seoul's autonomous districts on the 21st.
The district selected 16 multicultural families who met the settlement incentive support criteria such as residence period, marriage duration, and income in May, and conducted educational programs at the Jung-gu Family Center from May 26 to June 21.
The programs included three sessions each of family education to help healthy communication and relationship building among family members, and Korean cooking classes, serving as a stepping stone for smooth settlement in Korea.
During the cooking classes, participants made dishes such as galbijjim (braised short ribs), oi sobagi (stuffed cucumber kimchi), and garlic scape stir-fry, which was well received as it allowed a deeper understanding of Korean 'flavors.'
On the last class day, the families experienced traditional jang (fermented paste) culture by making gochujang (red chili paste) themselves. Mayor Kim Gil-seong also attended the class, conversed with the multicultural families who became new members of Jung-gu, and inquired if they faced any difficulties settling into Korean society.
Bolortoya from the Jung-gu Family Center, who planned this education program, is a marriage immigrant from Mongolia. She incorporated her own experience of struggling to adapt due to unfamiliarity with Korean food into the program. The gochujang-making class was arranged with the belief that directly making jang, the foundation of Korean cuisine, helps better understand Korean food culture.
Participant Xu Xiaofei shared, “I was happy to spend enjoyable time sharing the side dishes made in the cooking class with my family.”
After the gochujang-making class, a settlement incentive presentation ceremony sponsored by Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance was held. Each of the 16 multicultural families who completed the educational program received 1 million won.
Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “We welcome multicultural families who have settled in Jung-gu. We hope that the Korean culture adaptation program and settlement incentives will contribute to a healthy and happy life in Korea, and we will continue to prepare various support policies to help multicultural families settle in Jung-gu.”
