Gwanak-gu Operates Resource Circulation Club, Recovers 57 Tons of PET Bottles

The Central Role in Spreading the Culture of Separate Waste Collection

The First Resource Circulation Club Formed in Seoul...Collected a Total of 57 Tons of Transparent PET Bottles from Last September to June This Year

Strengthening Capabilities as a Leading Group in Resource Circulation through Facility Tours, with Plans to Continue Operations in the Second Half of the Year

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Junhee) is successfully fulfilling the role of a resident-led 'Resource Circulation Club' composed and operated by local residents as a leading group in resource circulation.

Formed in September 2022 as the first resource circulation club among Seoul's autonomous districts, the club participates in various recycling projects by helping residents practice recycling themselves and encouraging participation in separate waste collection.

Last year, the district focused on the transparent PET bottle deposit system project called 'Eco Tomorrow,' centered around the Resource Circulation Club, achieving a record of collecting 12 tons (approximately 300,000 pieces) of transparent PET bottles.

This year, the district reorganized the resource circulation clubs by neighborhood in February and has been promoting the transparent PET bottle deposit system project every Thursday at all neighborhood community centers since the end of March.

As a result, in the first half of 2023, about 25,000 residents participated in the transparent PET bottle deposit system project, achieving the remarkable feat of collecting a total of 45 tons (approximately 1.1 million pieces) of transparent PET bottles.

Additionally, the district has been enhancing capabilities by organizing tours of advanced resource circulation facilities for the resource circulation clubs. In May, the clubs visited the Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation located in Incheon three times and learned about the waste treatment process firsthand on site.

Building on the concrete achievements of the resource circulation clubs' operations in the first half of the year, the district plans to continue promoting various resident-led projects in the second half to activate recycling and establish a culture of separate waste collection.

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, “We will continue to support the resource circulation clubs so that more residents can make recycling and separate waste collection a part of their daily lives and voluntarily create a culture of resource circulation.”
