The Jeju Coast Guard has joined hands with the Namhae Fisheries Management Unit to strengthen crackdowns on illegal foreign fishing vessels.

On the 21st, the Jeju Coast Guard announced that on the 20th, it held a workshop on enhancing the capabilities of enforcement officers through sharing cases and know-how on crackdowns between the Jeju Coast Guard and the Namhae Fisheries Management Unit at the auditorium on the 4th floor of the Jeju Coast Guard office.

The workshop was attended by about 30 affiliated police officers and about 20 members of the Namhae Fisheries Management Unit, totaling over 50 participants.

Recently, there has been a continuous increase in cases of illegal fishing by Chinese vessels that have been permitted to enter authorized fishing areas but violated entry procedures, as well as cases of illegal fishing by Chinese vessels exploiting the entry procedure rules, which are regulated annually, in a manipulative manner. This workshop was promoted to strengthen the on-site response capabilities of agencies cracking down on illegal foreign fishing vessels.

During the workshop, key enforcement points of each agency regarding crackdowns on illegal foreign fishing vessels were shared, participants toured each agency’s patrol boats, fisheries inspection vessels, and enforcement equipment, and shared know-how and safety measures for crackdowns on illegal foreign fishing vessels. They also established enforcement measures to create a clean and pristine Jeju sea free of illegal fishing and to establish orderly fishing operations.

A Jeju Coast Guard official said, “We will do our best to create a peaceful Jeju sea through strong enforcement activities against illegal foreign fishing vessels, using this workshop as an opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the Jeju Coast Guard seized four illegal foreign fishing vessels this year and collected a deposit of 115 million won.
