The Department of Physical Education at Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced on the 19th that it has been selected as a Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institution for the Jeolla region in the '2023 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Sports Instructor Training Institution Designation Competition.'
This designation of sports instructor training institutions was promoted through a public competition hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in accordance with the government's policy to reform the national sports instructor system. A total of five institutions?one each in Seoul, the metropolitan area, Gyeongsang region, Jeolla region, and Gangwon region?were selected as Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institutions. The Department of Physical Education at Mokpo National University was chosen as the only training institution in the Jeolla region.

Until now, there was no training center in the Jeonnam area, so successful candidates for the Level 2 Sports Instructor in this region had to travel to other regions for training.
Professor Park Hee-seok, director of the Mokpo National University Sports Instructor Training Center, who was responsible for this project, said, “Although Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institutions are distributed nationwide, Jeollanam-do was the only area without one, causing many inconveniences for sports professionals in Jeollanam-do. With Mokpo National University being selected as a necessary Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institution in Jeollanam-do, where the population engaged in sports is comparable to Jeonbuk and Gwangju, we will operate the training to ensure trainees acquire the essential knowledge and skills needed in sports instruction and do our best for the development of sports in Jeollanam-do.”
To realize the wishes of sports professionals in Jeollanam-do, the Department of Physical Education at Mokpo National University formed a consortium with the Jeollanam-do Sports Council, Mokpo City Sports Council, Muan County Culture and Sports Division, and Mokpo Science University, and established collaborations with the sports councils of 17 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do.
Kim Sun-hee, head of the Department of Physical Education at Mokpo National University, said, “The selection as a Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institution is expected to play a significant role in nurturing sports instructors among the sports community and physical education students within Jeollanam-do. This is anticipated to have a positive effect in strengthening the foundation of community sports in Jeollanam-do.”
She added, “Currently, the Mokpo National University Sports Instructor Training Center has been conducting training for senior sports instructors since 2016 and was selected as an excellent training institution in 2017. This successful operational experience is expected to create a synergy effect in operating the Level 2 Sports Instructor Training Institution and help the Department of Physical Education at Mokpo National University emerge as a central institution for training sports instructors in Jeollanam-do.”
Meanwhile, the Level 2 Community Sports Instructor training hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will be held from August to December. The Mokpo National University Sports Instructor Training Center plans to operate the training, consisting of general classes and field practice, targeting 500 trainees who pass the written and practical exams.
