Submission of Resignation on the 19th
Proceeding to the End of Party Audit
Hwang Bo-seung-hee, a member of the People Power Party who is under police investigation for privacy controversies and allegations of illegal political fund acceptance, announced on the 19th that she would voluntarily leave the party and not run in next year's general election. Accordingly, the party audit on Hwang Bo-seung-hee being conducted by the People Power Party is also expected to conclude.
On the same day, Hwang's office stated in a phone call with Asia Economy, "We submitted the resignation letter today."
In her statement, Hwang said, "As of today, I will leave the People Power Party with the spirit of putting the party before myself and will not run in the 22nd general election," adding, "I sincerely apologize with a bowed head for causing great concern due to family matters and the police investigation."
Hwang said, "Considering the concern caused to the people, it is only right to give up my position as a member of the National Assembly," but also appealed, "However, I earnestly ask the people to embrace me with broad magnanimity so that I can fulfill my final responsibility to the local residents who trusted and elected me."
She continued, "I will humbly let go of everything, take full responsibility for all criticisms directed at me, and deeply reflect with a more humble attitude," adding, "I will prioritize the people's livelihood and devote my utmost efforts until the end for the success of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the future of the Republic of Korea."
Furthermore, Hwang emphasized, "Above all, I will live a devoted life for my two daughters who were hurt because of their unworthy parents," and said, "I will resolve the family matters and police investigation that cannot be spoken of and do my best to stand proudly before the people."
With Hwang's resignation from the party, the People Power Party's party audit committee is also expected to halt its investigation. The party audit committee decided on the 13th to conduct a party investigation related to Hwang and began verifying facts regarding the related allegations. After the Supreme Council meeting on the same day, Yoo Sang-beom, the party's chief spokesperson, responded to questions about Hwang by saying, "Since she is leaving the party, she will no longer be a member of the People Power Party, so the ongoing party audit is effectively expected to conclude."
The People Power Party expressed that it "respects" Hwang's resignation. Chief spokesperson Yoo said, "We feel very regretful," and added, "I think she made this decision after deep anguish, but from the party's standpoint, we have no choice but to respect that decision."
Hwang, who was elected in the 21st general election and entered the National Assembly, is under police investigation for allegations of illegal political fund acceptance (violation of the Political Funds Act) and violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act. Additionally, controversies have arisen regarding her maintaining a de facto marital relationship with a man who has a spouse, as well as allegations of private use of an official vehicle by her lover.
