The camp was planned to share and spread the values of democracy, human rights, and peace from the May 18 Democratic Movement and Jeju 4.3 through historical and cultural exchanges between elementary students from Gwangju and Jeju.

Participating students took joint lessons on Jeju 4.3, the student independence movement, the April 19 Revolution, and the May 18 Democratic Movement through prior Gwangju-Jeju online exchange learning. Through this camp, students were able to directly explore the historical sites they had studied in class.

Starting with this first Jeju camp, the students are also scheduled to participate in the second camp held in Gwangju from June 30 to July 1.

On the first day of the camp, activities included paying respects and touring the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park, watching a Nanta performance, and conducting a peace workshop themed “The Bundle of Peace Books.”

On the second day, students explored Jeju 4.3 historical sites (Jeongbang Waterfall, Seotal Oreum, Baekjo Ilsongjiji, etc.), participated in ecological experience activities at Tamnara Republic, and shared their reflections to conclude the camp.

Jung Seongsuk, Superintendent of the Gwangju Eastern Office of Education, said, “This camp provided a precious opportunity for students from Gwangju and Jeju to learn about and remember the history and values of democracy, human rights, and peace. We will strive to prepare various programs so that the history of Gwangju and Jeju can meet, communicate, and be remembered during the Gwangju camp as well.”
