Korea and Japan Agree on the Need for Hydrogen Energy... Cooperation on Safety Management

The governments of Korea and Japan have agreed to cooperate in the field of hydrogen safety, which is considered a next-generation energy source.


On the 19th, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a director-level meeting with the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to discuss policy cooperation measures in hydrogen safety and industry sectors.

At the meeting, Lee Ok-heon, Director of Hydrogen Economy Policy at the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Inoue Hiro, Director of Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy at Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, agreed on the necessity of hydrogen energy to achieve carbon neutrality.


They also shared their respective safety management and industrial policies being promoted to foster the hydrogen industry, including Korea's "Hydrogen Safety Management Roadmap 2.0" and Japan's revised "Basic Hydrogen Strategy."


Both sides agreed to continuously strengthen policy cooperation related to the hydrogen industry and safety following this meeting.


Meanwhile, the hydrogen gas safety organizations of both countries, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and the Japan High Pressure Gas Safety Institute, will hold a regular meeting from the 20th to 21st to share information on hydrogen safety management systems, gas accident cases, and prevention measures in both countries.
