Jeonbuk Senior Citizens' Sports Festival, Enthusiasm Runs High

The '2023 Jeonbuk Senior Citizens' Sports Festival' to enhance the quality of life for the elderly was held successfully.


On the 16th, according to the Jeonbuk Sports Council (Chairman Jeong Gang-seon), the Senior Citizens' Sports Festival aimed at creating vibrant living conditions for the elderly and improving their quality of life through sports was held throughout Jinan-gun.

This event marked the first opening ceremony in four years, which had been suspended due to the impact of COVID-19. The opening ceremony the day before was graced by the presence of Kim Jong-hoon, Deputy Governor of Jeonbuk Province; Guk Ju-yeong-eun, Chairperson of the Jeonbuk Provincial Council; Assembly members Yoon Su-bong; Jeon Chun-seong, Mayor of Jinan-gun; Hwang In-hong, Mayor of Muju-gun; Kim Min-gyu, Chairperson of Jinan-gun Council; and presidents of city and county sports councils within the province.


The competition featured over 2,200 elderly participants aged 65 and above from across the province, competing fiercely in nine events including gateball, ground golf, gymnastics, table tennis, tennis, ring toss, and tuho. The athletes proudly showcased the skills they had honed, representing the honor of their respective cities and counties.


As a result of the competition, Jeonju-si excelled in five events?gateball, table tennis, ground golf, tennis, and jegichagi?securing the prestigious overall championship.


The longevity award, given to the oldest participants, was awarded to Yang Bok-gyu (90) from Wanju-gun and Je Bong-sim (89, female) from Imsil-gun. Additionally, the championship trophies were raised high by Gochang-gun in gymnastics, Jinan-gun in ring toss, Iksan-si in tuho, and Jangsu-gun in yutnori.


Chairman Jeong stated, "Going forward, the Jeonbuk Sports Council will continue to strive to help senior citizens maintain a vibrant and healthy life through daily sports activities."
