Gwangju Nam-gu Council announced on the 16th that it adopted the 'Resolution to Include the Spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the Preamble of the Constitution' to inherit and develop the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement.
Through the resolution, Nam-gu Council stated, "The spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement is a historical value of democracy in the Republic of Korea and a spiritual value that must be inherited and developed. It inherits the democratic spirit of the April 19 Revolution and further forms the foundation of democratic government."
"It added that President Yoon Suk-yeol, during his presidential candidacy, promised to include the spirit of May 18 in the constitutional preamble, stating that it is the spirit of liberal democracy and the spirit that upholds the values of our constitution, but this has not yet been implemented."
Accordingly, the members of Nam-gu Council urged through the resolution, "President Yoon must immediately fulfill his campaign pledge to include the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the constitutional preamble, and the National Assembly must promptly establish a discussion body for including the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the constitutional preamble."
They also added, "The current government must take strict measures against individuals who have repeatedly made distorted and disparaging remarks about the May 18 Democratic Movement."
