2026 Production Target
Annual Capacity of 30 GWh
Expected to Create Around 1,700 Jobs
Samsung SDI is establishing an electric vehicle battery joint factory with the American automaker General Motors (GM) in New Carlisle, Indiana, USA.
On the 13th (local time), Samsung SDI announced that it decided to build a battery joint venture in New Carlisle, located in St. Joseph County in the north-central region of Indiana, USA, together with GM. The two companies plan to establish a battery production facility with an annual capacity of over 30GWh, aiming to start operations in 2026.
Earlier in April, the two companies announced plans to invest about $3 billion (approximately 4 trillion KRW) to build an electric vehicle battery joint factory. At that time, they disclosed the production scale and investment amount but did not reveal the specific location of the facility.
The site for the joint factory in New Carlisle covers an area of 2.65 million square meters, equivalent to about 390 soccer fields.
The two companies expect that the production facility will create about 1,700 jobs once completed. The joint venture will produce high-performance high-nickel prismatic and cylindrical batteries. These batteries will be fully equipped in GM electric vehicles to be released in the future.
On May 24 last year (local time), Samsung SDI selected Kokomo City, Indiana, as the site for its first electric vehicle battery cell and module joint venture in the United States with American automaker Stellantis, signing a contract to invest over $2.5 billion. With this, Samsung SDI will establish its second battery joint venture in North America, following Kokomo, Indiana.
Last year, Samsung SDI established a joint venture (JV) with Stellantis, the world's fourth-largest automaker, investing $2.5 billion (approximately 3.1625 trillion KRW) to build an electric vehicle battery production plant in Kokomo, Indiana.
The Stellantis joint factory has an annual capacity of 23GWh and plans to start operations in the first quarter of 2025, with plans to expand production capacity to 33GWh within a few years. Stellantis expects that this factory will create 1,400 jobs in Kokomo and the surrounding area.
