Armed Group Attacks Refugee Camp in Democratic Congo... At Least 40 Civilians Dead

According to foreign media on the 12th (local time), the armed group CODECO attacked the Lala camp for internally displaced persons in the northeastern Ituri province that morning.

Local officials and a representative of a civic group reported that at least 46 civilians died in the attack.

The civic group representative, Desire Malorde, said that CODECO militants killed people with guns and knives and set them on fire.

Eastern Democratic Congo, rich in minerals, remains unstable as over 120 armed groups, including the Tutsi rebel group M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces, operate and commit massacres of civilians.

According to the United Nations, more than 1.5 million refugees have been displaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to these armed conflicts.
