Gyeonggi-do Joins Forces with 11 Industry-Academia-Research Institutions to Foster Semiconductor Talent

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon is taking a commemorative photo after signing the agreement with representatives of the semiconductor shared university and semiconductor companies at the joint industry-academia-research-government agreement ceremony for semiconductor talent development in Gyeonggi Province, held on the 12th at the Suwon Next-Generation Convergence Technology Institute.

Gyeonggi Province is establishing an industry-academia-research-government cooperation system with local universities such as Kyonggi University, Myongji University, and Korea Polytechnic University, as well as related companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, to nurture semiconductor talent and prepare various workforce supply systems including employment-linked programs.

On the 12th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it signed the 'Gyeonggi Province Semiconductor Talent Development Industry-Academia-Research-Government Joint Agreement Ceremony' with 11 institutions including the Next Generation Convergence Technology Institute, Kyonggi University, Myongji University, Korea Polytechnic University, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, FST Co., Ltd., Dongtan ENG Co., Ltd., ATIK Co., Ltd., P&S International Co., Ltd., and S&I Engineering Co., Ltd. at the Next Generation Convergence Technology Institute in Gwanggyo Technovalley, Yeongtong, Suwon.

This event marks a full-scale step toward semiconductor workforce development and is a commitment to cooperation among the province, educational institutions, industry, and research organizations to efficiently nurture semiconductor talent in Gyeonggi Province, the center of the domestic semiconductor industry.

Through this agreement, each institution will actively cooperate in various areas including ▲ revitalizing public semiconductor education in Gyeonggi Province ▲ strengthening teacher capabilities and supporting excellent instructors from industry ▲ efforts to recruit outstanding talent ▲ establishing specialized curriculum completion systems or degree awarding plans ▲ providing broad educational opportunities through academic system exchanges between universities.

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon emphasized, "One of the biggest challenges companies mention is workforce supply. I hope that today’s agreement will be the start of producing many more talents from Gyeonggi Province. Furthermore, I will make sure to build a foundation to nurture talents not only in semiconductors but also in bio, AI big data, and advanced mobility."

Developing semiconductor talent is one of Governor Kim Dong-yeon’s campaign pledges.

To realize this, he carried out the first organizational restructuring last December and established the Semiconductor Industry Division. Subsequently, the 'Gyeonggi Semiconductor Workforce Development Center' called 'GSPEC' was set up within the Next Generation Convergence Technology Institute. Additionally, from March to April, a public contest was held to designate 'Semiconductor Shared Universities,' ultimately selecting Kyonggi University, Myongji University, and Korea Polytechnic University.

The Semiconductor Shared University program is designed for universities with semiconductor-related departments and companies to form a 'shared university' that shares curricula and practical facilities and provides internships at participating companies, thereby strengthening on-site practical education.

Gyeonggi Province is focusing on workforce demand analysis and demand-tailored specialized education to resolve workforce supply imbalances, promoting the development and education of field-oriented curricula, expanding semiconductor contract departments, and strengthening the 'employment-linked talent development support system.'
