Seoul City “Proceeding Normally with the Construction of the Largest Public Library in Korea”
Dongdaemun-gu “Land Use Only Until Construction Starts... Creating a ‘Temporary Flower Garden’ as a Rest Area for Residents”
A flower garden will be created on the site of the Seoul Metropolitan Library in Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, serving as a resting place for citizens until construction begins. The photo is an example of the flower garden creation.
The construction of the Seoul Metropolitan Library in the area of 691-3 Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu is progressing without any setbacks.
However, Dongdaemun-gu plans to create a flower garden and provide it as a rest area for residents until construction begins.
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) emphasized that the construction of the Seoul Metropolitan Library is proceeding as scheduled and that the ‘flower garden creation’ is a land use plan until construction starts.
The site has already completed the land use change from a school site to a public library site through the ‘Jeonnong 7 Redevelopment Promotion Plan Amendment Decision’ in November last year. The district announced that it plans to hold an international design competition in the second half of 2023, conduct basic and detailed design from 2024 to 2025, and start construction in the second half of 2025.
Seoul City’s position is that the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Library Construction Project’ is being carried out normally with the goal of ▲providing knowledge services for all life stages and a complex community space to enjoy culture ▲being the largest public library in Korea showcasing Seoul’s eco-friendly future vision ▲integrating books and knowledge information using the latest ICT technology and aiming to be a metropolitan library center.
Dongdaemun-gu plans to operate a temporary flower garden from September 2023 to June 2025 on a temporary basis before construction to alleviate the long-term inconvenience caused by illegal dumping, weeds, and pests within the site for residents.
The flower garden is expected to provide beautiful scenery year-round by sowing colorful flower seeds throughout the site, and it will be created by actively reflecting the opinions of local residents gathered through an ongoing survey.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “The flower garden creation project is a district-level effort to resolve residents’ inconveniences before the construction of the Seoul Metropolitan Library (Dongdaemun) and to provide a healing space where residents can take a walk and rest among fresh flowers. We ask for your understanding.” He added, “The district will continue to actively cooperate with Seoul City to ensure that the Seoul Metropolitan Library (Dongdaemun) construction project proceeds without any setbacks.”
