A Total of 12 Sessions and 1,000 Participants Scheduled This Year

A project involving the deployment of about 1,000 ‘divers’ to conduct a major cleanup of the Ulsan sea is underway.

On the 11th at 9 a.m., Ulsan City announced that it will carry out the ‘2023 Underwater Waste Collection Project’ starting from Gangyang Port in Onsan-eup, Ulju-gun, until October.

This project aims to create a clean marine environment and protect fishery resources, targeting Dong-gu Bangojin Port, Sangjin Port, Buk-gu Jeongja Port, Jejeon Port, Dangsa Port, Eomul Port, Ulju-gun Gangyang Port, and Sinam Port, and will be conducted a total of 12 times until October.

With a total project budget of 90 million KRW, it plans to collect about 40 tons of underwater waste.

About 1,000 participants including members of the Marine Corps Veterans Association Ulsan Federation, Korea Disaster Relief Team Ulsan Branch, and Ulsan Special Forces Disaster Relief Team will take part in the operation.

The work involves using boats and collection equipment to gather abandoned underwater waste materials, discarded fishing gear, and other debris, as well as collecting coastal trash and conducting marine protection campaigns.

An official from Ulsan City said, “We will put our utmost effort into thoroughly collecting marine waste to create a clean marine ecosystem and protect the diminishing habitats of fishery resources.”

Along with this project, Ulsan City plans to collect and process a total of 1,750 tons of marine waste through five projects with a total budget of 1.39 billion KRW this year via district and county offices, including marine waste collection projects, support for sea environment guardians, purchase of waste raised during fishing operations, and installation of marine waste collection centers.
