On the 8th (local time), Pigles recorded a 12-under-par 59 with 12 birdies in the first round of the PGA Korn Ferry Tour BMW Charity Pro-Am (total prize money $1 million) held at Sunblade Club (par 71, 7,045 yards) in Greer, South Carolina, USA. Pigles started at the 10th hole (par 4) and made five consecutive birdies from holes 5 to 9. Notably, he sank a 7.5-meter birdie putt on the 9th hole (par 3).
Pigles exclaimed, "I had no chance to shoot 59. For the last hole, I just decided to make sure the ball passed the hole." He added, "I'm really happy to have shot 59." This is the ninth time in total that a sub-60 score has been recorded on the Korn Ferry Tour. Earlier this season, in April, Mac Meissner (USA) shot 59 in the second round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic. Born in 1997, Pigles debuted on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, with a best finish of tied 4th. This year, he missed the cut seven times in ten tournaments.
Among the previous eight instances of sub-60 rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour, only two players have gone on to win: Jason Gore (USA) in 2005 and Stephan Jaeger (Germany) in 2016. Pigles finished the first round two strokes ahead, laying the foundation for his first career victory. He said, "I enjoy competing in tournaments," and expressed his determination, "I will play excitedly for the remaining three days."
