Vote on Consolidation of Women-Only Parking Lots
Gender conflict erupted over the 'women-only parking spaces' at a dormitory of a major corporation.
To resolve the conflict, a vote on integrating the parking lots was held, but during this process, different weights were assigned at a ratio of 1 to 2.5 between men and women, leading to further protests from some male employees.
Recently, a post titled "The current burning issue of the Hynix dormitory parking lot within the company" was uploaded on an online community.
The author, presumed to be an SK Hynix employee named A, mentioned the dormitory issue at the Icheon campus, stating, "As the number of dormitory residents increased, parking spaces became insufficient, causing inconvenience."
He said, "One floor of the dormitory parking lot is set to 80% women-only, so men are not allowed to use this area," adding, "Meanwhile, women can comfortably park in other areas as well."
He explained, "For several years, there have been opinions that the parking lots should be integrated, but since proper surveys or votes were not conducted, dissatisfaction among people only accumulated."
He further added, "One of the reasons for having women-only zones was stated in meeting minutes as 'for the psychological stability of female dormitory residents,' and the attitude of viewing male dormitory residents as potential criminals sparked outrage, leading to the decision to hold a vote on integrating the parking lots."
A also reported that gender inequality issues arose during this process.
He revealed, "A notice was posted stating that to prevent a tilted playing field, votes would be weighted according to the gender ratio of employees, with one male employee counting as 0.4 votes and one female employee as 1 vote."
He continued, "A comment on the related post said, 'In the 19th century, Black slaves counted as 0.6 votes per person, but male dormitory residents at Hynix only get 0.4 votes.' I don't understand the vote to integrate a parking lot that was originally unisex, nor do I accept that the vote itself is a tilted playing field."
The post received over 1,000 comments, including reactions such as, "I would understand if women only parked in that area," "Are women disabled?" and "(Male dormitory residents) are not even fully recognized as one person as a human being."
Regarding this matter, SK Hynix reportedly explained to media inquiries that "since there are more male employees, weighting was unavoidable."
