The ‘Hanwha Young Professor Award’ is a program jointly hosted by the three companies to discover and support Korean scientists with less than seven years of experience active in North America and Europe. It has been held since 2015 and marked its 8th year this year.

The heads of research institutes from each company and overseas advisory professors formed a judging committee and selected four scientists as this year’s awardees through a fair evaluation process.

Hanwha TotalEnergies selected Professor Ji-hye Park of the University of Colorado Boulder, who has demonstrated excellent research achievements by publishing numerous papers related to carbon capture and conversion. Hanwha Solutions Chemical Division selected Professor Do-hyung Kim of the University of Pennsylvania, who conducted research in the field of electrochemical catalysis, and Professor Sang-hoon Bae of Washington University in St. Louis, who applied 2D-based material development to various businesses.

Hanwha Advanced Materials selected Professor Ju-hyung Lee of Utah State University, an expert in high-performance and high-functionality aerospace composite materials, as this year’s awardee. Professor Park said, “I am pleased to have my achievements recognized in the field of chemistry, which can promote the advancement of eco-friendly technologies,” and added, “I will continue to devote myself to research activities that contribute to the collaborative development of technologies between academia and industry.”

The awardees each receive $12,000 as research support funds. They also have opportunities to participate in seminars for employees of each company’s research institutes and engage in joint research. Sang-seop Na, CEO of Hanwha TotalEnergies, said, “I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude and support to our scientists leading the field of chemical engineering overseas,” and added, “I hope that various collaborations, including joint research and project execution for the development of Korea’s petrochemical industry, will continue.”
