Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has issued a special directive for thorough pre-inspections to prevent damage from various disasters such as heavy summer rains.
Since thorough preparation is the key to minimizing damage, the district plans to personally oversee disaster-prone areas and focus all efforts on protecting residents' lives and property rights.
According to Nam-gu on the 9th, during a monthly work report meeting held recently, they inspected flood control materials such as pumps and absorbent sandbags stored at the 17 administrative welfare centers in the district ahead of the rainy season. They emphasized completing the expansion and placement of sandbags within this month to ensure thorough disaster preparedness.
Additionally, they highlighted the importance of initial response during heavy rains and requested prior preparations including managing flood-prone areas, removing debris from underpasses, rainwater inlets, and drainage systems.
Nam-gu Mayor Kim Byeong-nae’s on-site activities for summer safety are also accelerating.
Ahead of the full rainy season, he plans to enter the underground sewage culverts installed around Baegun Square on the 13th to inspect obstacles and the condition of facilities.
He will also carefully check the management status of 1,500 sandbags stacked at seven locations around Baegun Square, including in front of the Nam-gu Volunteer Center and Donga Hospital.
Currently, 6,776 rainwater inlets have been installed in the district for flood prevention. The management department conducted a comprehensive inspection and installed location signboards for rainwater inlets at the end of May, and is preparing for an additional inspection at the end of this month, transitioning to a continuous management system.
Furthermore, Mayor Kim Byeong-nae plans to conduct simulated drills soon at seven flood-prone areas, including around the International Archery Field, where damage is likely during heavy rains, to monitor employees’ disaster response capabilities.
The drill is expected to involve 35 employees from the Safety and Urban Affairs Bureau of the district office, who are in charge of each zone, and 12 employees from six administrative welfare centers.
In addition, various departments related to disaster safety within the district office plan to complete early inspections of various facilities, including around large construction sites, floodgates near the Yeongsan River, steep slopes, and cut slopes.
A Nam-gu official said, "Sudden situations during summer can occur at any time, so the importance of prior preparation is emphasized more than ever. There is no such thing as too much preparation for safety, so we will always approach district administration with a ready attitude."
