Professional Environmental Education Conducted Alongside Experiential Learning by Instructors Dispatched from the Korea Environmental Education Association

Carbon-neutral city Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) will operate the ‘Visiting Climate Change Classroom’ for kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students in the area over five months from June to October.

The ‘Visiting Climate Change Classroom’ was planned to build consensus on climate change response among future generations?kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students?amid worsening environmental issues such as climate change and ecosystem destruction.

The first class of the ‘Visiting Climate Change Classroom’ was held on June 2 at Kyunghee Kindergarten (photo), and a total of 46 sessions will be conducted until October: 20 sessions for kindergarten, 18 for elementary schools, and 8 for middle schools.

This ‘Visiting Climate Change Classroom’ will be conducted by instructors from the Korea Environmental Education Association dispatched to each school, providing professional environmental education tailored to the students’ levels.

The education will include theoretical lessons on the relationship between global warming and climate change, reducing greenhouse gases, and energy saving to engage students’ interest in environmental issues. It will also combine experiential learning such as making personalized Sandeulbaram fans (kindergarten), Scandia Moss frames (elementary school), and sock yarn keyrings (middle school).

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Environmental education for students, the future leaders, is essential to transition to a carbon-neutral society in this climate crisis era. Starting with this education, we will continuously expand climate environmental education and practical movements to realize Dongdaemun-gu as a carbon-neutral future city.”
