Anonymous Donor "Help the Poor"
Donations Used to Support Residents in Need
An anonymous 'donation angel' has appeared in Dong-gu, Daejeon, leaving envelopes of money behind.
Since September of last year, white envelopes of unknown origin have been found at the Shinindong Administrative Welfare Center in Dong-gu, Daejeon.
Employees on their way to work have found them inside the entrance of the welfare center, and sometimes visitors have picked them up and handed them over.
The envelopes, discovered two to three times a month, have the message "Please help the poor" written on the outside, and contain between 20,000 and 50,000 won inside.
On the 8th, an employee of the Shinindong Administrative Welfare Center told Yonhap News, "We have no idea who it is, but respecting their wish to remain anonymous, we are not trying to find out," adding, "It is clear that this person is very humble."
The donations are used through the local community security council to support food supplies for sharing refrigerators and to assist residents in welfare blind spots who need help.
There was even a case where a resident, unable to work due to an unexpected accident and struggling financially, was able to receive hospital treatment thanks to the donations.
A resident who received emergency welfare support said, "With the help of a stranger, I was able to ease the overwhelming worries about my livelihood," and added, "When my situation improves, I want to practice sharing for someone else, even if it is a small amount."
Park Hee-jo, mayor of Dong-gu, said, "In a reality filled with individualism and hardships, the good deeds of small donors helping neighbors in need remind us that donations are not only for the wealthy but something we can all do," and added, "Just as a butterfly’s small flap can cause great change, I hope the actions of the Shinindong donation angel become a seed for a society where we live together."
