Regional Industry SW and Digital Transformation
Rising as a Hub for Professional Talent Development
Gyeongnam National University was recently selected as a ‘2023 Software-Centered University’ by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced the selection of 13 new universities for the ‘2023 Software (SW) Centered University Support Program,’ among which Gyeongnam National University was chosen as the first SW-centered university in the Gyeongnam and Ulsan regions under the general track.
The ‘Software (SW) Centered University’ initiative aims to innovate university education by focusing on software, cultivating SW professionals, and enhancing the software competitiveness of students, companies, and society. The program provides demand-driven SW education, nurturing majors into practical talents with global competitiveness, and non-majors into convergent talents equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge and SW literacy.
With this selection, Gyeongnam National University plans to operate the project with a total budget of 22 billion KRW from national funds over eight years, 15 billion KRW from Gyeongnam Province, Changwon City, and industry support, and an additional 4.5 billion KRW from university funds, totaling approximately 22 billion KRW, focusing on leading the SW and digital transformation of the regional industry.
First, Gyeongnam National University will unify its education system centered on the AI·SW Convergence College through the ‘Gyeongnam National University SW-Centered University Project Group,’ nurturing SW convergence talents in 12 departments including the Department of Computer Engineering, Department of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Future Automotive Engineering, and Department of Game Studies.
Additionally, the project’s goal is set as ‘Realizing a university centered on smart manufacturing ICT/SW and AI·SW convergence talent cultivation for future new industries.’ The university plans to establish practical and smart lab-type educational environments that mirror the field, such as the ‘DX (Digital Transformation) Center,’ ‘24/7 AI·SW Open Lab,’ ‘Open Source SW Practice Room,’ ‘SW Creative Convergence Imagination Room,’ ‘AI·SW Employment and Startup Cafe,’ and ‘AI·SW Lounge,’ to cultivate practical SW talents demanded by partner companies.
Through this, Gyeongnam National University will be equipped with the capability to continuously supply ‘demand-tailored SW convergence talents’ required by more than 100 partner companies in the region, including LG Electronics, Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Information Systems, and Hanwha Machinery.
Gyeongnam National University is emerging as a hub for SW education and talent cultivation in Gyeongnam by performing workforce development and R&D for regional industries as a leading university in the Gyeongnam ICT/SW convergence industry, through initiatives such as the Ulsan·Gyeongnam (USG) Regional Innovation Platform’s ‘Smart Manufacturing ICT Centered University,’ the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s ‘Future Automotive Technology Convergence Innovative Talent Cultivation Project,’ and the attraction of the ‘Gyeongnam Global Game Center.’
