Daegu City Provides 50 Million Won Each to 5 Alley Markets... Songraro, Naedangjeil, Heobeuro, Jibeom, Padogogae

Support for Alley Market Recovery: Environmental Improvement and Promotional Marketing

Daegu City announced on the 8th that it has selected a total of five locations as target sites through the public contest for the second phase of the ‘Alley Economy Zone Creation Project,’ called the ‘Alley Commercial District Recovery Support Project.’ The selected alley commercial districts are Songraro Alley, Naedangjeil Alley, Sangyeok Heobeuro Alley, Jibeom Alley, and Padogogae-gil.

Daegu City established the ‘Daegu Alley Commercial District Mid- to Long-Term Plan (2021?2025)’ in 2021 and has been promoting the ‘Alley Economy Zone Creation Project’ in collaboration with the Daegu Traditional Market Promotion Foundation, aiming to strategically nurture a total of 120 alley commercial districts by 2025. In this third year, the city plans to continue tailored support for each stage of alley commercial districts by discovering and selecting 20 locations in the first phase (foundation establishment and organization of alley commercial districts) and 8 locations in the second phase (stabilization of alley commercial districts).

The ‘Alley Commercial District Recovery Support Project’ is one of the second-phase projects. Among the 13 alley commercial districts that applied through the public contest held in May, a total of five were finally selected after expert evaluation: Songraro Alley in Dong-gu, Naedangjeil Alley in Seo-gu, Sangyeok Heobeuro Alley in Buk-gu, Jibeom Alley in Suseong-gu, and Padogogae-gil in Dalseo-gu.

Songraro Alley in Dong-gu, Daegu, is a commercial district formed between Sincheon Station and Cheonggu Intersection. Nearby are many public institutions such as the Korea Student Aid Foundation, Korea Eximbank Daegu Branch, and Daegu Trade Center, along with numerous popular restaurants. Last year, the ‘Songraro Festival,’ which had been suspended due to COVID-19, was resumed, hosting singing contests and promotional events to revitalize the commercial district and foster harmony with local residents.

Naedangjeil Alley in Seo-gu is a commercial district located in a densely populated residential area near Naedang Station on Daegu Metro Line 2. It is adjacent to various cultural facilities such as large supermarkets, Duryu Park, and the popular tourist destination E-World. Recently, large-scale apartment complexes have been built around the commercial district, and an increase in the influx of people to the area is expected.

Sangyeok Heobeuro Alley in Buk-gu is a commercial district formed in the 1980s in the Sangyeok 2-dong residential complex. It is adjacent to themed complexes such as EXCO and the Industrial Materials Center, with excellent accessibility via Bukdaegu IC, Sincheon-daero, and Sincheon-dong-ro. The proportion of local customers in their 40s and 50s is relatively high, and through this project, plans are in place to raise awareness of the aging alley and devise ways to attract external customers.

Additionally, Jibeom Alley in Suseong-gu is a commercial district formed in the large apartment complexes of the Jisan Beommul area. It has a high floating population due to the concentration of convenience facilities such as department stores and hospitals, and it is located near Beommul Station on Metro Line 3, making accessibility easy. In the past, the commercial district was mainly composed of restaurants and academies, but it has now developed into a commercial area where various industries coexist.

Padogogae-gil in Dalseo-gu is also a commercial district formed between Naedang Station and Seongdang Market Intersection. It is adjacent to various cultural facilities such as the popular tourist destination E-World and Miro Mural Village. In particular, a significant portion of E-World visitors influences the sales of the shopping district, raising expectations for its development into a specialized street combining culture and food.

The finally selected alley commercial districts will receive project funds of up to 50 million KRW to carry out community capacity-building education, integrated commercial district design development, commercial district revitalization consulting, and individual store solution consulting to improve the commercial environment (management, VMD, hygiene environment, etc.), as well as promotion and marketing through online and offline channels. Detailed plans for specialization will be discussed and implemented for each alley commercial district.

An Jung-gon, Director of the Economic Bureau of Daegu City, said, “We will provide tailored support to the five alley commercial districts with development potential and strategically nurture them as models for alley commercial district revitalization.” He added, “In the future, competitive alley commercial districts will be developed into distinctive and vibrant representative premium alley commercial districts of Daegu through government public contest projects.”
