Frequent Rain Makes Garlic Fields Inaccessible to Machinery

Harvest Delays, Urgent Need for Farm Labor Support

Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is making an all-out effort to assist with farm labor by actively encouraging participation not only from county officials but also from related organizations and groups.

This year, the farming performance for garlic, onions, and rice planting is lower than last year, and many farms are experiencing difficulties due to labor shortages.

Recently, frequent rain during the peak harvest period has made it impossible for machinery to enter, delaying the garlic harvest, which now must be done manually.

Considering that if garlic is not harvested within this week, farmers may have to give up the harvest, active participation in labor assistance is being requested not only from public officials but also from related organizations and groups.

So far, 507 people from 47 organizations, including Changnyeong-gun and Gyeongnam Province officials, fire stations, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, and the Korean Red Cross Gyeongnam Branch, have extended helping hands.

A garlic farmer expressed gratitude, saying, "Despite busy administrative work and hot weather, we are thankful for the help with labor," and added, "We could feel the county’s sincere concern for the farmers."

A county official stated, "We hope this labor assistance has helped farmers who are short of hands, even if only a little."
